Haram cosmetic? What haram cosmetic? There doesn’t exist anything as such! This was my reaction when i first heard about this concept. But then, a recent encounter with cosmetics labeled to be halal led me to do a research on this topic. So today i deceided to talk to you guys about it in detail.
WHAT IS A HARAM COSMETIC?
Well it will not be a new piece of information for us that some products out there contain alcohol. As it is clearly mentioned on these products so we can asses before purchasing them
But did u know that some cosmetics contain pig fats, collagen and gelatin( from animal sources) . These products include mostly lipsticks, lipglosses, lotions, etc. and it doesn’t take a genius to realize that when we apply these lipsticks/ stains whatever we ingest is contaminated with them
Now let’s talk about those ingredients that are not so prominent infact an average person won’t even think about it’s existence. Yes, i am talking about CARMINE. What is carmine you ask? Well it is a pigment, a natural pigment that is derived from an insect Coccus Cacti. This insect is dried and crushed to produce a bright red pigment used in most cosmetics such as eyeshades, lipglosses etc.
HOW TO TELL IF THE PRODUCT IS HALAL OR HARAM?
First thing you should do is to look for the obvious haram ingredients such as alcohol
Secondly look for products that are cruelty free or not tested on animals
Other ingredients which are mostly derived from animal sources include:
Alantoin (uric acid derived from cows and mostly used in creams and lotions
Carmine, carminic acid (E120, E132)
HOW OFTEN DO WE COME ACROSS THESE PRODUCTS?
Many many brands out there do use non vegan ingredients in their products upto some extent so it is upto us to look into the ingredients and if we do find ingredients such as placenta or lard there should be no doubt left that it is haram but in case of ingredients such as gelatin we should do some research and find out if they are synthetic or from an animal source
Other than these, please avoid buying those extremely cheap chinese/korean makeup products as they dont have any ingredients listed on them
Also, avoid buying fake products because more often than not, these have packaging similar to the original one with all the ingredients printed identical to the original one ( God knows what these products actually consist of?)
So please next time you buy any cosmetics make sure they don’t contain any haram ingredient, I mean what is the puropse of refraining from all the haram foods and drinks when we don’t give a second thought to what goes on to our skin and lips!!
